Guest Columnist At The Mac Mind

I was a guest writer for a column called Friday Night Links at The Mac Mind, a site run by Anthony Cole, an acquaintance of mine from Random Shapes. In it, I provide some commentary on five links I dug up related to happenings in the world of Apple this week. Check it out

Reconnected and Catching-Up

scared of computer

It had been quite awhile since I’d last been on vacation, and after returning from one last evening, I realized that being away from my computer for a mere four days had a far larger impact than I’d ever imagined.

When I came back home, it wasn’t even the 30 emails (only 5 of which weren’t spam) waiting for me in my inbox, or the 200 odd-some unread articles in my RSS reader. No. You see, when I first booted up my computer, it even felt strange to use a mouse, or drag a window about. It was as if I’d never used a computer before.

Now, this didn’t last too long, but what did was all the catching up I had to do — the missed messages from my friends on AIM, trying to find out the happenings in #randomshapes on IRC, making a feeble attempt to read 20 pages worth of Digg content. Believe me, the list goes on.

When I think about it, the fact that, if I had been home, I would have consumed all of this content is honestly a bit sad. It made me realize that I spend a truly huge chunk of my time basking in the glow of my monitor.

Maybe I should go on vacation more often!

New Site is Now Live

After toying around with various non custom WordPress themes for the past month or two, dissatisfied, about two weeks ago I sat down, and with my minimal design chops began constructing what you’re seeing right now. It’s a big change for the site, aesthetically and also functionality-wise (read: there’s actually a sidebar now). In addition, I’ve switched from Textpattern to the WordPress platform to manage my blog’s content.

I really couldn’t be happier to finally have a blog that looks and feels such that I can actually be proud of it.

Sidenote: I’ve done only minimal testing with this design, so I’d really appreciate it if you could either contact me, or leave a comment, if you encounter any issues.

I like Thursdays

I like Thursdays, because before there is Friday, there is Thursday. Thursdays make you realize that life is always a matter of waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Thursdays are always dreaming of how wonderful the next thing will be, but that to get there you first must endure what lies between. It is what lies between, the substance that fills these isolated points, that is life. So make the most of Thursdays, because even though Friday is tomorrow, we still have an entire day ahead of us.

As a personal sidenote, I fully intend to keep blogging. For the past month and a half, I’ve been in a rut in regards to writing, and life has been really hectic. Things are now going more smoothly, so I’m glad to be back.

Explanation

I know, I know, it’s been way too long since I last blogged. It’s not that I haven’t felt like it, I’ve just been busy lately, and all of this past week I’ve been really sick. Soon, though, I’ll be returning to a regular update schedule (3 times a week?), and some changes will be made to the blog itself. Currently, as far as that goes, I’m contemplating a switch to WordPress, and a minimal design is in the works.

I’ll keep you posted and will be back soon (I hope).

Dirt-cheap RAM — take that Apple, Crucial

I scored a great deal over at Newegg for a gigabyte of RAM for my iMac for only $78.99. Wow! I ordered two it was so cheap, plus I think there’s a significant performance boost between 1.5 and 2 gigs of RAM. It’s crazy: 2 gigs of RAM from Crucial, $227.99, and directly from Apple, a cool $300.

Cool.

Society has hit a new low when…

…this is supposed to be a massive insult (no joke):

“You’re just jealous because no one goes on your myspace and you have no pic comments and no one ever talks to you.”

This was taken from an actual AIM conversation. I empathize for the youth of America. Actually, no I don’t.
